How to Clean your Carpet by Hand

If you are not entirely happy with the condition of your carpet, you may decide to clean it. Lighter carpets can become dirtier a lot quicker and regardless of colour, carpets lose their soft touch and colour over a period of time. You have four options at this point: the first option is to remove and replace your carpet, which can be expensive and may not necessarily be the best decision to make. The second option is to hire a carpet cleaning service where professional cleaners will come and clean your carpet for you. This idea is a little more cost effective than purchasing new carpets, but may still be a little over your budget (especially if you want to clean carpets in more than one room). The third option is to purchase or hire a carpet cleaning machine of your own and clean your own carpets, which is even more cost effective than the first two options and may be something that you are interested in. Finally, the last option you have is to clean your own carpets by hand, which will by far be the cheapest option for you, but will require the most effort.

If you decide to opt for the final option, then this article is going to be your best friend. It is going to guide you in the right direction and help you clean your own carpet by hand.
Ensure that your room is as empty as possible so that you are able to clean as much of the carpet as is possible.

The first thing you need to do is ensure that you have all of the supplies that you are going to need. You can either purchase a commercial carpet cleaning product or you can decide to make your own (there are many carpet cleaning solutions that can be made using common household products). You will also need a vacuum cleaner and a bristle brush.

The first thing you need to do is vacuum the whole area that you wish to wash. Always ensure that the suction power is at its greatest so that you can get rid of the majority of dirt.

Depending on whether you are using a commercial product or a homemade remedy, distribute the product according to the instruction on the packaging or how you have been told by whoever has passed on the remedy. Follow the guidelines given and use a brush to allow the cleaner to work deep into the fibres of your carpet, so that you are able to get a thorough clean rather than a carpet that is only clean to look at.

If you are using a commercial product, the packaging will usually tell you to allow the carpet to dry and then to vacuum up the residues which will also dry up. You are then able to move your furniture back into your room. However, this is not the case with homemade remedies.

You will need to rinse the carpet using a clean wet cloth that needs to be rinsed every now and again and then the carpet should be allowed to dry thorough. Ideally, you can hoover the carpet again, although with home remedies, this is not compulsory.

You will see that your carpet will look, feel and smell a lot cleaner, fresher and more attractive, which is exactly what you need to restore your carpet. Whilst it may be time consuming and require a lot of effort on your part, it will be well worth it when you see a carpet that looks as good as new.
